LGBT Youth: From Trauma to Belonging

Track: Elective course for all Certification Tracks

Prerequisite: None

Audience: Primarily geared towards educators, professionals that work in school settings, or child advocates

Starr Commonwealth holds its Trauma & Resilience Conference annually, to ensure as many people as possible have access to the best tools and programs to bring about meaningful change in the children they serve.

In this training, participants we learn about the trauma associated with rejection and the “crisis of belonging” experienced by our LGBT+ youth, and build strategies of resilience for all to flourish.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be able to: 

  • Explain common rejections of LGBT youth in their homes, communities, and schools
  • Explain the impact of rejection and the "crisis of belonging" on LGBT young people
  • Explain how rejection, internalized homophobia, etc. traumatizes LGBT youth and how this impacts their health and well-being
  • Utilize the 'Five-Shifts' to connect with and understand fellow members of the human family
  • Create safe learning environments for LGBT+ students and identify strategies one can use to be an ally.
